One of the most anticipated events of the school year, the annual ELS Basketball game, is making its return Thursday during B and C lunches. Over the past few weeks, seven ELS athletes have been putting in hard work and preparation to play in their anticipated game.
Every week, the buddies have spent time learning about the game, the rules, and practicing. They have been putting in all their effort each week to perform their best.
“They’re always giving their all and working on their skills every day. They’re trying their best, trying new things, giving it their all, all while having fun. I can’t wait to see how their hard work pays off. I think it’ll be a great game,” Integrated Wellness classmate Ryan Valentincic said.
This year, the ELS athletes will rematch students from New Trier Township. Last year, the athletes secured their victory against the Trevians 54-52.
This year, the Integrated Wellness class has designed yellow t-shirts being sold around school, along with raffle tickets that can be used for more than 50 prizes. Every year, the class picks a charity to raise money for and donate their fundings to. This year, the class has chosen Camp Hope as their charity.
Camp Hope is a five-day summer camp that provides opportunities for young adults with developmental disabilities. Throughout the summers, these young adults will participate in numerous summer camp activities. This week creates a week full of memories for the campers and counselors.
While many of the athletes training comes from their wellness class, their training also comes from Special Olympics, a club at LFHS. During Special Olympics, the athletes play: bocce ball in fall, basketball in winter, and track and field in spring. The athletes train twice a week after school in preparation for their big games.
“Our players have seen so much improvement from just the beginning of the year. They are all such team players, and they always bring the best spirit,” club member Sophia Zar said.
However, this event is more than just a game. Being one of the most loved events at LFHS, the school spirit throughout the event is high. Every year, the bleachers are filled with cheering students and staff members. In addition to the screaming students, the Pep Band and the Varsity Cheer Team will also be there to add to the spirit.
“The school spirit at this game is just so amazing. There is not a single person in that room that isn’t standing on their feet cheering as loud as they can. It’s just an incredible experience,” senior Ellery Newman said.
For many LFHS community members, they find this event uniting.
“This game gives the opportunity to showcase the skills of ALL of our students,” staff member Mr. Matthew Wilen said.
