It’s November, and our community needs some volunteers!
For seniors involved in the National Honor Society (NHS), volunteer hours need to be completed before the end of the first semester and the Dec 31 deadline is approaching faster than you think.
For any LFHS juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, NHS is available to any junior with at least a 4.5 GPA and a minimum of 30 volunteer hours. Volunteer hours count from any year in high school, so if you are interested in NHS for your junior year, now would be a good time to start getting your service hours.
If you are not interested in NHS, getting involved in the community is still a great way to spend time. Volunteers are needed everywhere, and extra support would be greatly appreciated by any organization.
Beacon Place in Waukegan is a great place to volunteer! It is a neighborhood community center with programs for families
and children to provide them a better future. They often have different seasonal events as well as opportunities for volunteers to assist with educational and enrichment programs.
The Roberti Community House is relatively similar to Beacon Place. It is a gathering place for residents living in a distressed neighborhood of Waukegan. From September through May, there are after-school opportunities for volunteers to help engage kids with different activities, crafts, and homework help!
Fil-A-Heart just relocated to uptown Lake Forest and provides volunteer opportunities aimed at helping teens and children without family support. This includes homeless youth and foster children. Sessions are 40 minutes long. For student volunteers, high school student service hours are from three to five during the week.
Lake Forest Open Lands is a unique volunteer opportunity. There are different volunteer activities, many outside directly helping the environment. One of their main volunteer opportunities is their Adventure in Restoration (AIR). Activities vary by season but include manual labor and assisting in the restoration. A fun way to help our earth, Open Lands has a variety of events!
Big-2-Little is a club at LFHS that meets every Wednesday and goes to an elementary school in North Chicago. The club accepts applications all year long, so there are always opportunities to join!
In addition, CROYA occasionally holds service events that count for volunteer hours as well as being super fun! Other community service opportunities include House of Peace, Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, Mother’s Trust Foundation, and Northern IL Food Bank. Bernie’s Book Bank and Feed My Starving Children no longer count for NHS service hours but are still good opportunities to help out the community.
