The Lake Forest High School night race has been an anticipated race of the season for many athletes. The race takes place in the dark, an unusual atmosphere in comparison to their early morning or afternoon races. The participating schools go all out, dressing head to toe in neon. The race is followed with fun, sweat, and determination.
While the anticipation of the race might bring nerves to the runners, once they cross the finish line, it is a night full of celebration.
“After the two mile race, the team hung out and took pictures, and there was music playing, it was a super fun time. It was really nice for our team bonding as well, which is key for team sports,” junior Cassidy Gorham said.
With this unusual event, the coaches wanted to make it enjoyable as possible for these athletes.
“Cross country is a challenging sport, practices are hard along with difficult meets. Coming up with an event that is fun provides a lighter atmosphere for the runners,” said cross country coach Mr. Steve Clegg.
The runners dressed in their glow in the dark accessories, making the race bright and colorful.
These runners get the joy out of the race, from start to finish. They finish the race with the roars of family and friends cheering them on to the finish line.
“The night race consisted of multiple races, and even if you ran first, everybody stayed and supported each other. The other teams would also cheer you on and motivate you to keep on going which showed immense amounts of support,” said junior Megan Lawnziak.
These runners are not only ending the race with a burst of joy but also a stronger mindset. Because it’s a themed race, its more fun than stressful, making the runners eager for next year’s event.
Freshman Emma LeGrand shares her thoughts on the night race, “I really liked how everyone was super enthusiastic about it and put in lots of dedication for the race to be heard and seen and I can’t wait for the next three years!”
The beloved night race is one that many of the runners will continue to look forward to in future seasons.
