Why Northwestern?

I chose Northwestern because it has really strong academics across all the areas I want to study or try, especially the social sciences, journalism, and theater, and I can take more classes because of the quarter system. It also has a bit of everything, with good (ish) sports and a lot of clubs, having access to Chicago while not being directly in the city, and being right on the lake.”

What are you most excited about?

“I’m most excited about meeting new people, trying new clubs and classes, doing activities like the newspaper and theater at a college level, exploring Evanston, and going down to the city more.”

How did you first hear about Illinois?

“I’ve always known about UIUC just because of how close it is to home, and I know a few people who have gone there in the past, but I never really considered applying until my dad sat  me down and talked to me about the school.”

Why Illinois?

“I chose Illinois because it had everything I was looking for in a school, good academics and major school spirit. But what really sealed the deal for me was the fact that when I was touring the campus, I could envision myself loving life there, I just felt really excited.

How did you first hear about Mizzou?

“I first heard about Mizzou when I was researching schools with good programs for my major, and my parents brought up visiting there in the fall of junior year.”

Why Mizzou?

“Mizzou fit all my criteria with its size, weather, and distance, but I mostly picked Mizzou for its journalism program!! I’ve known I wanted to study journalism for years, and the Reynolds Journalism Institute at Mizzou is ranked highly, which made the school super appealing. It has a very social and welcoming campus too, which is definitely what I want for the next four years.”

What are you most excited about?

“I’m from the south, and Mizzou has that fun SEC vibe that I love, so I’m beyond excited to go to football games! I also cannot wait to explore Columbia and meet new people.”

Name: Tom Foley

College: University of  Missouri

Major: Journalism

Location: Columbia, Missouri

Mascot:  The Tigers

How did you first hear about Mizzou?

“I first heard about Mizzou while talking to a retired journalist by the name of Bob Runnells. He told me the two best schools for a journalist were Northwestern and Mizzou. I had never heard the latter being called by that name and so I did some more research about the school.”

Why Mizzou?

“It was the first journalism school in the world, it created the curriculum for other schools to adopt. Its program is ridiculously impressive, with four newsrooms to choose from and tons of opportunities for actually getting your career as a journalist started while in college. Its building is beautiful too, while many public schools put the journalism major on somewhat of a backburner, Mizzou places it directly in the forefront. Additionally, my mentor used to work in covering Missouri politics, so I have a connection to many professional newsrooms throughout the state. I was originally between UIUC and Mizzou, but not only did the caliber of program not compare but while UIUC’s stem programs are extremely competitive, being at Mizzou gives me more access to explore the field of technology.”

What are you most excited about?

“Honestly, a change. I truly love the friends I have made here at LFHS and choosing Mizzou was a really hard decision because I wanted to stay close to the people I’ve surrounded myself with here. Mizzou isn’t really the kind of school I envisioned myself ending up at but that’s kinda what makes it so exciting. By fully submerging myself in a very different environment, I hope it’s the “untethering” I need to find a better sense of self.”

As a kid, I loved the idea of being in New York City and NYU always fit that dream of going to college where the city is your campus. Even from when I was really young, I could see myself at NYU.”

Why NYU?

“I chose NYU because it really is a school where I can pursue everything I’m interested in. Right now I’m undecided, but the program I got accepted into, called Gallatin, allows me to pursue an individualized study where I can take classes across all the colleges at NYU. I’ll be able to study things I’m passionate about like history and journalism, while also exploring a wide variety of new interests! I love the dynamic of a busy city and the aspect of having a non-traditional campus — having New York City as the backdrop of my college experience was something I really wanted.”
