100-Word Stories: My Life Changed When I Discovered ….
April 6, 2023
The Forest Scout has launched a new series: 100-Word Stories. We plan to share 100 funny, poignant, memorable stories from the students, faculty, and staff of LFHS. Each story will be exactly 100 words.
This week we asked students to tell us about something that changed their lives when they discovered it.
Senior Grace Thomas grew up loving the show ‘Blue’s Clues’ so much so that she dressed up as her for Halloween! She discovered that Blue was actually a girl a long time after she began watching the show, which blew her mind; her understanding of Blue completely changed as it made her realize how quickly society correlates certain objects and colors with gender. Even though Grace was so young, she had accepted society’s assumptions that the color pink is for girls and the color blue is for boys, but ‘Blue’s Clues’ showed her that color and gender have no boundaries.
When Amelia MacArthur, a senior at LFHS, first discovered the wonderful resources Mrs. Hektor has to offer, she had spent an entire day searching for a computer charger. She had looked everywhere, asking friends (and even random sophomores) desperate to juice up her dying laptop. Frustrated and exhausted, she decided to take a break and chat with Mrs. Hektor, when, to her surprise, Mrs. Hektor had a charger readily available and lent it to Amelia with a smile. Amelia was eternally grateful and happy to have someone always willing to share their resources.
Senior Matty Michael’s spring break was memorable for many reasons, but there was one item that will never be forgotten – the virgin pineapple pina colada. When walking down the boardwalk of the Baha Mar resort, something caught Matty’s eye. A man sitting on the pier with a giant pineapple. However, this was no ordinary pineapple, this fruit was hollowed out and filled with virgin pina colada. Matty knew she needed to try this drink. The 10-minute wait was worth it, as she finally got to taste the delicious treat, and she got to feel like a real islander doing it.
