All of the opinions expressed in this article are solely that of Elizabeth Porter, editorialist for The Forest Scout.
By now you probably know that our principal, Dr. Chala Holland, released a single on Spotify. You may also know that Fox 32 reported on it, featuring the statements of several alarmist parents. The majority of the parents stated concerns about “our girls” and the message it sends to them. This should not have made the news, but it did.
As a 17-year-old female student of Lake Forest High School, I can safely say that the message it sends is quite the opposite of what these parents and Fox 32 suggest that it is.
Dr. Holland is very well-liked and well-respected among the students of LFHS. Seeing her take the chance–and to have the profound courage–to create a piece of art, despite the possibility of negative reactions, is inspiring. The message this song imparts on students, male or female, is to follow your passions, live your dream, be yourself, and don’t obsess over how people who know nothing about you will perceive you.
I actually attend Lake Forest High School, so unlike the parents and reporters of Fox News, I can speak to how the students are responding. The students think it impressive and respect Dr. Holland even more because of her willingness to be an artist, express herself, and define herself as an authentic person, not just a conveyor of educational facts or an unapproachable higher-up in charge of strictly making decisions. I have spoken to countless classmates and friends and not once have I heard: “this makes me uncomfortable,” “she shouldn’t be acting like this,” or “this is distracting from our education.” Instead, I have heard, “wow, I respect her,” “those parents should get over it,” and “I never knew she had a passion for music.” What students appreciate is being unique, being creative, and being brave. Furthermore, most of our parents do not see this song as a problem; the parents quoted in the news were a small sample whose opinions do not accurately reflect a majority of parent’s responses. So Fox 32, if you want an accurate representation of how students are reacting, maybe consider asking a student. After all, we’re old enough to speak for ourselves.
I realize that not every student at LFHS is an adult. Having been there, I realize that different students handle situations like this with varying levels of maturity. However, suggesting that this is somehow corrupting our young minds or inappropriate is simply wrong. This song is not “very graphic,” a gross misrepresentation perpetuated by the parents being interviewed that showed up on our television last night. We live in a world with constant media bombardment of sexual, illicit, and violent material. This song is not an example of that. It is artistic and innocent compared to any other rap or pop song that is played daily on the radio. To think that these lyrics are setting a bad example or encouraging bad behavior is ridiculous. We see our own parents drink wine, smoke cigars, and more, every day. A grown woman is legally allowed to do those things. Neither the cover photo, nor the lyrics are inappropriate for a song by any reasonable standards.
Saying that this is harmful to female students is, in my own opinion, sexist and illogical. Female students see Dr. Holland as a strong role model who is confident in who she is and is devoted to making our school the best it can be. We are perfectly capable of forming our own opinions and controlling our own behavior. We do not appreciate parents in this community telling us that we need to be shielded from this content. To me, spearheading that movement is demeaning and unnecessary.
In addition, bringing the upcoming school board election and Dr. Holland’s “controversial hiring” into this is a thinly veiled attempt by parents who are unfairly and obviously biased against Dr. Holland to use this media coverage to serve their own agenda. The rhetoric that we students heard from parents who opposed hiring Dr. Holland was was far more disturbing than the content of these lyrics. Having a passion for music does not make you unfit to be the principal of a high school. On the contrary, Dr. Holland is a qualified and excellent principal who Lake Forest is lucky to have. Using this song to attack her ability to principal is not right and, to me, represents an immaturity that is not setting a good example for our students. Parents of Lake Forest: If you are so concerned about setting good examples for students, let it start with your own behavior.
If you insist on bringing the school board into this, then this is what I suggest: 18 year old students of Lake Forest High School and community members, educate yourselves on the candidates for this upcoming election and vote accordingly. This election does affect us, so make your voice heard.
And lastly, I can assure you that no one is calling it “Chala’s hot new beat.”

It is reassuring to read this resounding statement and all the supportive responses it has evoked. Ms Porter’s clear-headed analysis and rhetorical skills are impressive, truly an asset to our community. This is the kind of thing that gives me hope.

Dr. Holland and Ms. Porter, thank you for being role models and speaking up, thank you for speaking to the good of this community and thank you for showing up.

Congratulations on a well said piece. As a therapist who works with teenagers, and a parent of past, present and future LFHS students, I fully support your positions that Dr. Holland is setting an excellent example for our students, particularly the young women. Additionally, her actions have a president; Frank Lucas, a CPS teacher and administrator, is a recording artist and most recently partnered with Dee Snider, the lead singer of Twisted Sister, on pieces addressing cancer and the protesters in the Dakotas.
What I found most alarming, as a parent and taxpayer, was the self-promoting behavior of parents who would stand before a microphone and pretend to speak for the student body and its parents.

Kudos to you, Elizabeth, for clearly articulating your insights and convictions! Well done! As a parent of a recent LFHS graduate — Chris Fischer, 2016 — I am sorry he didn’t have more time there under Dr. Holland’s leadership before graduating. Chris strongly supported her arrival as principal. I was very proud he chose to take a public stand back then and I applaud you for publicly voicing your support this time. Good job!

Right on, Ms. Porter
As the Grandmother of 2 delightful and mature Grandaugters who are students at LFHS, I support their support of Dr. Holland – both as their primcipal and as a Lady.

I was still an employee of the high school at the time of Dr. Holland’s hiring and thus not fully free to express my opinions about the sheer pettiness of the people who sought to keep this amazing educator out of LFHS. I attended the board meetings and listened to their thinly veiled comments wondering what year it was. But then I recalled that voices had been raised against me as well, but most of the community supported me, and I knew that, although these people were loud, they represented but a very small minority of our constituency. I am enjoying my retirement, but one of my greatest regrets is that I only was able to spend a single year working with and learning from Dr. Chala Holland. If these petty people would open their eyes, they might realize what a treasure she is and understand, as Ms. Porter intimates here, that her recording a song like this teaches her students only the best of all possible lessons. We should all have been so fortunate in our high school principals.

Go Dr. Holland and Go Elizabeth Porter!!
Anne de Got • Feb 1, 2017 at 9:49 pm
Bravo Elizabeth. Your article summarizes exactly what I was thinking. Dr. Holland is an asset to Lake Forest High School and should be applauded for sharing her artistic talents as well as her passion and dedication to her job. LFHS is lucky to have such an intelligent and dedicated principal.
Corinne stagen torkelson • Feb 1, 2017 at 9:36 pm
I say loudly and with great admiration for Dr. Holland, “hear, hear”, as i agree with Elizabeth’s eloquently written article so much that I want everybody else within earshot to hear my support of Dr.Holland. My senior daughter and many of her friends are all proud of their principal and her freedom of expression is admired by many of the staff and students.
Amanda Stubblefield • Feb 1, 2017 at 9:17 pm
Thank you Ms. Porter for such an eloquent and well thought out presentation of the information. The small minded perspectives shared on Fox 32 do not represent who we are in this community. Dr. Holland is an asset to our community, our schools and an excellent role model for the students in our district.
Anne de Got • Feb 1, 2017 at 8:19 pm
Thank you Elizabeth. Dr. Holland should be admired. Your article captured all of my sentiments and was beautifully written. As a parent of a Lake Forest senior, I am grateful that Lake Forest High School is so fortunate to have Dr. Holland as an leader to our students, teachers and parents. Being intelligent, artistic, athletic and beautiful inside and out should be celebrated, not condemned.
Johnna Deering • Feb 1, 2017 at 5:53 pm
Well said! Completely agree.
Diana Moore • Feb 1, 2017 at 5:17 pm
Well done, Elizabeth. Your strong, clear voice is an inspiration to me and my family. I, too, see Dr. Holland as a strong, principled leader.
Since Dr. Holland’s tenure at LFHS began, we have seen creative innovation in things as disparate as an improved menu in the dining hall, to the addition of a Theater Department. We have seen expansion and innovation in many academic areas, including new offerings in the arts, math, english, science, language and social studies. ACT scores have continued to rise, sports and music continue to enrich lives, more kids seek challenge in AP courses, and the community at large is offered access to lectures and resources from myriad sources.
I have listened to Dr. Holland’s song, and can’t fathom what the ruckus is about. What I hear is a song about love; of two people in love, together, working for their future, and honoring one another. It’s romantic, and it’s a reminder to all of us to care about one another.
I must admit I am a little cynical about those who attack Dr. Holland for releasing this song. Some of the names I have seen in print are the same who opposed her hiring back in the summer or 2015. I can’t help but wonder about their agenda.
As Elizabeth said, we have an election coming. In fact, it is on April 4. If you will be 18 by that day, you have the opportunity to make your opinion heard. Our elected school board members have real power, and your vote determines who holds that power. Getting registered is easy; go to http://www.lakecountyil.gov/361/Voter-Registration to learn how.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for speaking up. You lead by your example.

Thank you Elizabeth, well said and written and I am with you!
Michelle Burgener • Feb 1, 2017 at 3:23 pm
Furthermore, it speaks to the lack of integrity of those seeking to take a knock at Dr. Holland only to further their own agendas. She has done something creative, inspiring and totally innocent of any scandal. Ridiculous that Fox “News” would even entertain this “story”.
Michelle Burgener • Feb 1, 2017 at 2:37 pm
Agree, Elizabeth!! Very eloquent!!
Jim moss • Feb 1, 2017 at 2:09 pm
Elizabeth that is one of the best persuasive articles I have read in a quite some time. At a time when mainstream media has lost its way, it is refreshing to read a passionate piece that is organized, concise and has opinions well supported. Your view point is what I hear from other students. At the risk of trivializing your excellent article, you could have ended with “mic drop…out”
Gary Lawrence • Feb 1, 2017 at 12:55 pm
Elizabeth Porter just nailed it! Brilliant!
Martha Collins Zeeman • Feb 1, 2017 at 11:50 am
I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Dr Holland. She is a woman of courage, integrity and strong faith. She is a wonderful example of a strong female leader for all students. My daughter and son both respect Dr Holland and think the environment at LFHS has significantly improved since she arrived
Patricia Carollo • Feb 1, 2017 at 10:52 am
Intelligent, Athletic, Artistic, and dare I say diverse? If anyone has doubts about Dr Holland, take the time to sit down and talk with her. You will be very impressed and thankful our kids have her leading them through this stage of their lives. Great view point E. Porter!
Taryn Fisher • Feb 1, 2017 at 10:37 am
Thank you for your fine opinion piece, Ms Porter. I am so proud to know that young women like you are out there voicing your opinion. If you are any indication of Dr. Holland’s influence, then we are most certainly on the right track at LFHS. I will be sharing this with my two LBES children tonight as an example of what to strive for when they are at the high school.
Pamela Damesek • Feb 1, 2017 at 10:21 am
Terrific article. Very well said.
Brenda Hucke • Feb 1, 2017 at 10:10 am
Dr. Holland is a First Class Lady, she has done nothing wrong. She is so into making LFHS the Best. Some parents only know how to make complants. They should show respect for her. I worked at LFHS and got to know this lady, she is awesome and cares about the kids and there e3ducation. To the Parents, you should look into your Dist. Office and the School Board that only think of the reputation and how much money they make. Start supporting your kids instead of your nit picking ways. So if your such a good parent when was the last time you made brewakfast, dinner and seen what on earth your child is wearing. The Education program is top education for your kids.
Your School Board has changed many things over the years, it use to be a Great Place to call Home for the Staff and your children
Go Chala, your doing Great

This opinion is nothing more and nothing less than a testament to the quality of education students are receiving at Lake Forest High School. Ms. Porter’s comments are well thought and written, and call to issue the bigger concern of where this story came from and why it was raised in the first place.
With an upcoming school board election, the same narrow group that fought the hiring of Dr. Holland has decided to form a slate of candidates to take over control of the school board. The size and composition of the slate is designed for one purpose – to promote their political and ideological agenda.
The problem of course is not their agenda – we live in a country that promotes different ideas and freedom of thought. That this story would be seeded to the media featuring commentary from individuals directly tied to the narrow interests of these few is the most unfortunate part of this situation.
Given the current political climate, the last thing we should be doing is driving the national identity crisis and conflict into our schools and our community. Most especially, where the focus is our children. A story like this is a petty attempt to smear the reputation of a fine principal and the existing school board.
How sad these people are to drag the election of some of the most important people who serve our children to such a low level. How selfish these people are to believe they have the right to push their own narrow political and social agenda on our children. Shame on them, our children deserve better than this.
Full disclosure: I support the Caucus candidates.
