ELS Basketball Game Makes Successful Return
April 1, 2022
LFHS Wellness Teacher and Coach Chuck Spagnoli took his Integrated Wellness class to the court Thursday for the annual ELS basketball game. Last year the game was canceled due to Covid restrictions, but this year it made its return, facing off to alum instead of the typical New Trier opponent.
The competition gym stands were packed with spirit, as students and teachers gathered to watch and cheer on the players. The event was equipped with not only fans, but cheerleaders, announcers, and the band. Many of which made an appearance in their ELS basketball game t-shirts that were sold to raise money for Camp Hope, a summer camp for teens and adults with disabilities.
Walking into the game the band was playing the typical game day songs, and the gym was decked out in posters showing spirit for the players. Scout Nation also assisted in the enthusiasm for the game, hanging posters and banners around the school.
Jane Riley started at the center line for the Scouts, facing off against her alumnus opponent. The alumni however took the ball and got it over to their side, eventually earning them the first point of the game.
The Integrated Wellness TA’s help throughout the game as well as organize the event, but are careful to let the game be conducted by the players.
“Being a part of the ELS game was by far the highlight of my Lake Forest experience It was so amazing to see the whole school come together and create an experience as amazing as it was for these students,” said TA Ashleigh Rupprecht. “The smiles on the players face was priceless.”
The crowd was heavily involved in the game. There were several exciting plays, getting the fans off their feet cheering for the players. One particular basket made by alumnus, Ivan Coughlan, had the stands screaming. Coughlan made a half court shot, the only during this year’s game.
For many students, the ELS Basketball game is a symbol of LFHS coming together in order to support something that’s so important to our community and classmates.
“Right when I walked into the room, everyone was cheering and supporting the teams,” freshman Reese Harper said. “It was so incredible to see the whole school together watching the game and supporting our classmates.”
The final score was 42-43, the alumni taking home the win.
