Reviewing As It Was, Harry Styles’ New Single
April 1, 2022
Harry Styles’ much anticipated new single, As It Was, came out at 12 a.m. on Friday UK time or 6 p.m. Thursday Chicago time. Many fans are ecstatic because Harry has not released new music since dropping Fine Line on December 13th , 2019.
Because of Styles’ Love on Tour‘s postponement and the two movies that he has been in (Don’t Worry Darling and My Policeman), it has been a long 3 years with no new music.
Harry has been hinting at a new album for a while. He created a new Instagram called You Are Home, on which he would post pictures of partially open doors that revealed images. He would also end his concerts by saying “Bring me home!” again hinting at his new album titled Harry’s House.
He announced that his new album will be released May 20th of this year. It will include 13 songs, which is one more song than his past album. Many fans have predicted that the album may be a soft rock album, since Harry is a fan of artists like Joni Mitchell and bands like Fleetwood Mac.
One thing that Styles does very well is vary his music. His first and second albums were very different, one with a more New York vibe and one a more summery California vibe. However, after having listened to his new single, it seems like his new album will have more of a retro feel to it.
The song had a much different style to it, rather than being more run-of-the-mill pop like his past two albums, this song was more retro sounding. It was not quite an indie song, but it was not quite pop either. His video was classic Harry, and it felt very similar to some of his older music videos. It was very quirky and felt true to Style’s personality and style (no pun intended).
It was a daring change for Styles to try a new sound. However, it seems to have paid off as fans have gone crazy. It very much has an 80s sound to it, making it different from many of the current songs on the radio, which will hopefully make his music stand out from other artists. Despite the song’s upbeat tune, the lyrics have a more melancholy meaning.
“Harry, you’re no good alone
Why are you sitting at home on the floor?
What kind of pills are you on?”
Ringin’ the bell
And nobody’s coming to help
Your daddy lives by himself
He just wants to know that you’re well, oh-oh-oh.”
This makes the song more soulful and gives the listener more of a look into Styles’ creative mind. Although he is being vulnerable, it really paid off and makes his work seem very raw and emotion-filled. It also gives the listener a chance to feel more connected with Styles although they may be worlds apart in reality.
There is also a lot more Harry content for fans to look forward to other than his upcoming album. My Policeman and Don’t Worry Darling will both be released to theaters in the coming years. His world tour will start June 11th in his home country of England, and his cosmetics company, Pleasing, has been releasing new merch and nailpolish.
It is needless to say that Styles fans will listen to any music that he creates; however, As It Was is truly a good song even for those who do not like Styles’ other music. It will be very exciting to see what the rest of the album entails and whether Harry will continue with this new sound of his.
