What are you speaking about and why did you choose this subject?

“I am talking about my life and how hardships leave you with a ‘bitter residue’ or negative emotions. For example, when I lost my mom, I was strangely apathetic. But on the inside, I was too self-absorbed in my own problems to see that others are also hurting. But reaching acceptance is important about this idea. The idea is about overcoming those emotions and becoming a better person.”

When did you first realize this was the subject that interested you?

“I’ve always been introspective, and since this was forced on me through my experiences, it didn’t just come to me. When I heard about the TED Talks, I saw this as an opportunity and felt that I can do this from what I’ve put into figuring out who I am.”

What motivated you to do a TED Talk?

“I’ve been in speech class this semester and I’ve started to enjoy giving speeches. But I also feel that I have a story that is meaningful and people could get something from hearing it.”

What do you want people to learn or appreciate about your TED Talk?

“I want people to take away the larger message, that things will get tough, but you have to work to cleanse yourself of your problems and negative emotions. Eventually, if you realize this, you will come out the other side alright. But also that people need to be grateful for all of the people you can fall back on in these hard times.”

How did you prepare for the TED Talk?

“I did a speech in speech class that was on a similar topic, but it was in a very different format for about 20 minutes rather than seven. My speech is more prepared for knowing myself and the words that I want to use. I have been practicing it and bouncing my ideas off of other people.”

How nervous are you to speak in front of so many people?

“It’s tough to say because I’ve been giving speeches in front of people for a while. I am nervous but I have a strong belief in myself that I will be able to deliver this speech and do it very well. Since my speech is more personal, I guess I am nervous about being open about my own life.”
