College Corner: Sports Commits

In this special edition of College Corner, Jack Carrabine plans to play lacrosse at Colgate University

Lakshmi Ojha, Staff Writer

Only a junior, Jack Carrabine has proved himself both on and off the field. Alongside being a Varsity lacrosse player, he is also on the Varsity hockey team. He was also recently inducted as the first lacrosse player onto the 4Jack plaque, a part of the Learn 2 Lax 4 Jack, an introductory lacrosse program created in memory of Lake Forest alum Jack Adams.

Carrabine plans to continue his academic and lacrosse career at Colgate University.

What drew you the most to lacrosse and pushed you to continue playing?

“Definitely the spontaneity of the sport and the high competitiveness that it needs. Also, the fast paced competitiveness, the high skill, hard work, the perseverance, the all around like aspect of it.”

What is your earliest memory of playing lacrosse?

“When my dad brought home two lacrosse sticks, because he played in high school and we just played catch with each other in the yard. I was probably in first or second grade.”

What is your favorite memory of your high school career?

“It’s all the off-field things that we did, especially as an underclassman. You wouldn’t expect yourself to just grow and become close with the upperclassmen, especially all the seniors. At first you feel intimidated by them, but over the course of just driving you to practice, having dinners with them, off the field talking with them, and even on the field, you slowly develop a bond and know how each other plays.”

Do you have any goals going into your college career?

“Athletically I would say an All American, that would be really cool. Academically, I would say just staying on top of my grades.”

What is your biggest fear about the transition?

“There is always the injury, but also not finding a niche on the team.”

What drew you to Colgate and pushed you to commit?

“First the academics, that was my big thing, but also the relationship with the coach. Usually when you have these conversations you’re nervous, you don’t know what to say, like they might judge you on certain things. But with him, everything felt natural; everything felt like you’ve known each other for years.”

Who is your biggest role model?

“I would probably say Charlie Silver; he was the defenseman on the team last year. He plays lacrosse now at Wesleyan down in Connecticut. I got to just learn from him, everything honestly. I mean kind of like following in his footsteps taking leadership roles on the team.”

Do you have any rituals or special preparations for games?

“Just doing little footwork drills to get a little warmed up and get going. I’ll also play pass with friends just to feel the intensity and Numb Encore by Jay-Z—that’s my go-to song.

How do you feel about this upcoming season?

“Well, last year, as such a big year, we had these three dominate seniors who all left…Obviously, we want to do what we did last year: go to the State Championship and actually win it this time.”
