The Super Bowl is an event like no other.

People from all around the world tune in to watch the biggest and most important football game of the year.

While this event is often remembered for the game itself, the memories and routines of watching and celebrating the Super Bowl are what keep many of us enjoying and watching the game.

“Each year all my family members get together, usually at our family friend’s house to watch,” junior Kareem Alsikafi said. “I think it’s fun for everyone in my family.”

Last year, the Super Bowl drew 96.4 million viewers according to CBS, despite the Tampa Bay Buccaneers routing the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9.

This year, fans from all over the world will be watching the Los Angeles Rams play against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“This weekend I’ll be watching the Super Bowl with my family,” Math teacher Jay Kleeman said. “We’ll do our own little appetizers and side dishes and we’ll just have a party of five.”

As people turn on their televisions to watch this massive game, they will return to their favorite traditions that have made the past Super Bowls so memorable.

“I watch the Super Bowl every year because it’s amazing to see the best two teams in the NFL play with everything on the line,” senior Joey Nassar said. “I also like spending time with my friends and family and eating classic Super Bowl dishes every year.”

Spending the Super Bowl with others is very popular, however, eating specific foods each year is also a routine for many.

“One tradition that I have always kept every year is eating lays with french onion dip.” senior Will Glyman said.

The Super Bowl has brought numerous classic games that have been very popular and special for many fans.

“I remember the Super Bowl with the Bears and their defense and Jim McMahon, Willie Gault, Walter Payton, and the Fridge running for the touchdown,” Kleeman said.

While older Super Bowls made the expectations for the game sky high, recent Super Bowls have lived up to these expectations with key moments and huge plays.

“Young me was a Seahawks fan, and watching the Seahawks pass the ball on the one-yard line when they had one of the best running backs in the league in their backfield was so heartbreaking,” Glyman said. “Although it was a bad memory, it was memorable.”

Tom Brady has been on the winning side of many Super Bowls, including against the Seahawks. His greatness has been represented with his NFL record seven Super Bowl wins. Following his retirement this offseason, he will be forever remembered in Super Bowl history as one of the best to ever do it.

“I’ve been very lucky to watch one of the best quarterbacks of all time perform at his peak. While it’s easy to root against a winner, and don’t get me wrong I have rooted against him winning, I do feel like it has been a privilege to be able to watch him play,” Kleeman said. “You’ll never see it again, so to be able to live through it, it’s pretty cool.”

Without the game, the Super Bowl is still an amazing way to spend your Sunday. The commercials, usually an afterthought and very boring, are somewhat entertaining and special.

Along with the commercials, the typically boring halftime during NFL games is celebrated with celebrities and artists performing. This year is one of the best groups yet with Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, and Kendrick Lamar.

“I’m most excited for Kendrick Lamar. It’s as simple as that. He’s my favorite all-time artist.” Glyman said.

All of these great events happening at the same time make the Super Bowl an amazing experience that appeals to many different fans.

“The hard part about the Super Bowl is there’s no time to take your breaks,” Kleeman said. “If you like the game, then you’re not taking it during the game, and if you like the commercials you’re not taking your break during the commercials, so for me, I always struggle in the Super Bowl. Like when do I get to go to the bathroom?”

The Super Bowl has often been one of the best games of the year. This NFL season has surprised many fans with multiple comebacks, upsets, and unlikely outcomes, including, and leading us to the Rams and Bengals meeting each other in the final game.

“I just think that the Super Bowl is going to be an incredible cherry on top,” Glyman said.
