Teddy Huddleston: The Future of Scouts Hockey

Layla Ward, Staff Writer

Sophomore Teddy Huddleston is one of the most valuable assets to boys Varsity Hockey. He is one of three sophomores on the Varsity team, including Murphy Morehead and Andrew Sommers. Huddlestun, in his first year on Varsity, has been starting at goalie for the team, and he has been playing hockey since the young age of four.

“My house is really close to the Winter Club, every winter they make ice there, obviously, so…ever since I could walk I really wanted to skate,” Huddlestun said. “Our family friends at the time had a pair of skates that I could use that were my size, and after that I kind of just fell in love with the sport.”

Skating at the Winter Club fueled his love for skating, and that quickly turned into a fascination for hockey. It was not until multiple years later that Teddy started being a goalie for his team.

“I actually didn’t really start being a goalie until multiple years after I learned how to skate,” Huddleston said. “I actually started playing goalie because my team needed one for the season, and I was like ‘alright screw it, put me in there, it looks fun,’ and it’s kind of been history ever since.”

Because Teddy’s older brother and sister also played Varsity hockey at Lake Forest, it had always been Teddy’s goal to make Varsity since a young age.

He had been practicing a lot in anticipation of making Varsity his sophomore year, but also knew that he had an edge above other underclassmen since he was a goalie.

“I actually wasn’t that surprised, because there aren’t many other goalies that play for Lake Forest,” Teddy said. “My coach kind of reassured me that I would make the team.”

Huddleston, however, is not the only sophomore goalie. The other goalie for the Scouts this year just happens to be another sophomore: Andrew Sommers. Because of this and other young talent on the team, teammates are feeling optimistic about the future of Lake Forest Varsity Hockey

“We’re losing a lot of key seniors, but there are a lot of younger guys that will be able to step up,” Sommers said.

There is optimism for the future of Scouts hockey among teammates of Huddleston.

“The hockey team will be twice as good next year, especially with Teddy Huddleston getting older, bigger, and tougher,” senior Charlie Drake said. “There are also a bunch of JV guys with a lot of skill that are getting ready for their opportunity to play Varsity hockey. That will really help the team, along with a lot of underclassmen on Varsity that will take the team far.”

“The best years of Lake Forest hockey still lie ahead of us,” senior captain Rocco Ferretti said. “I hope that Bobby and I as Captain and Alternate Captain can leave behind a legacy that Jack (Alternate Captain) and all of the rest of the young talent can exceed. On and off the rink I am always packing the barn.”

This faith that the senior players have in the future of the team is very reassuring for the Scouts as the season progresses and students and players alike start to think about next season.
