Mr. Lance Ferges

Mr. Lance Ferges

Despite teaching at the high school for over two decades, Mr. Lance Ferges’ dedication to his students and his unique personality have never faded.

“Mr. Ferges is one of the most intelligent and well-spoken teachers, let alone people, I’ve ever met,” senior Will Bazell said. “He’s always full of energy and his sarcasm is unmatched, which makes each class with him a blast. He also has a great sense of fashion as seen by his iconic polo shirts.”

You will learn something new each time you visit Room 307. Just be careful of 307B, as Mr. Ferges swears that the closet in the back of his room is actually haunted. In fact, his closet has been called many things.

“About 10 years ago, at a department meeting, we were told that the teacher who kept referring to the ‘martini bar’ in his classroom closet might want to stop making that joke,” Mrs. Eccleston said.

Besides AP Lit, Mr. Ferges teaches English 1H, and while his sarcasm may have confused some students during the first few weeks at school, I immediately felt at ease. Going to class and waiting for a funny comment is often the highlight of students’ days. He constantly makes jokes with his class, such as stating that he is over 100 years old or poking fun at students who may have forgotten to do their homework.

“I really admire how he goes out of his way to make everyone feel comfortable in the class. I feel like that’s really important for teaching and a lot of teachers aren’t able to do that, but he is,” senior Sadie Specketer said.

Many students may not know that he is married to Mrs. Eccleston, a fellow English teacher. You may have seen their daughter, Brin, in the school before as she loves to come and hang out with the students.

“He wants his students to know what true learning is–not a grade, but hard work, integrity, and curiosity.  I’m not sure which he loves more–getting a class to talk about Shakespeare, or getting a class to laugh together,” Eccleston said.

While he excels in teaching, virtual learning was a foreign concept to Mr. Ferges. Never teaching a class online before has led to some struggles. Fortunately, these difficulties have only added to the hilarious class stories.

“One time he was lecturing and his WIFI went out for 10 minutes before he clicked back on and he told us he was talking to no one for 10 minutes,” senior Emily Bertram said.

If you are lucky enough to have Mr. Ferges as a teacher, make sure to compliment his fantastic sense of humor and his polo shirts, especially the one with lemons on it.
