Scenes From Lake Forest Black Lives Matter Rally
Students, alumni, and community members come together in support of racial justice
June 5, 2020
On Wednesday, June 3, in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd and subsequent nationwide protests, Lake Forest High School students and alumni organized a peaceful rally in support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement in Market Square. The lineup of speakers featured community members and prominent local leaders and activists. Hundreds attended, making it by far the largest recorded protest in Lake Forest history.

This all makes me so sad. When my kids were at the high school and participating in sports and music programs their friends looked like the United Nations. They had friends that were of Indian, Columbian, Nigerian and Brazilian descent. They had friends that were black. They didn’t obsess over it and really enjoyed each other. One experience in particular stands out. Roshanda McWilliams was a team mate on the girls track and field. She really developed and blossomed at Lake Forest High School in spite of some challenging personal life issues. Her junior year the school voted her in as Prom Queen. She still is on the board as part of the school record in 4×400. You are what you focus on. I am sad to see us as a nation focusing on the negative to the extinction of the positive.

Stop glorifying this movement and this wave of protests. What a biased article about an organization that promotes cop-hatred and bigotry. Here we are, 2020, and large portions of our community are celebrating with open arms the welcoming of this organization and movement into our town. You probably do not care whatsoever about all the businesses that had to board up and lose revenue because of your “right to protest”. Shame on you for virtue signaling, and shame on all the people who came to protest. This article does not cover in any way some of the negative sides of the Black Lives Matter movement. The insanity with which an entire nation has begun to celebrate this movement just boggles my mind. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe, just maybe, China, Russia, and Iran are laughing their heads off at America right now? And rightfully so. This article does not help and is ONLY working to PROMOTE Black Lives Matter as a movement. The BLM movement is based on a lie. African-Americans are no more likely to be killed than European-descended Americans by the police when adjusted for crimes committed. Plain and simple. Shame on the organizers of the event, shame on the protesters at the event, and shame on those who positively publicize it! Police officers are heroes who risk their lives everyday to protect us, and yet this movement and this article spits in their face. Blue lives matter too!

Thank you student journalists! I’m sorry my generation has left your generation so much to clean up: climate, world relations, truth ingovernment, racism. But I am heartened by your reportage and couldn’t be more proud of you if you were my own children who both graduated LFHS.

I’m crying. I’ve sent this to my kids. It will take the younger generation to change the future. They ARE the change. God Bless all of you.
