Alex Mutter
You may know him as “innovative,” “knowledgeable,” “athletic,” or merely “that British kid”—but regardless of which of his many talents you know him for, you likely know the name Alex Mutter.
“He’s always out there doing amazing things like giving a Ted Talk, skiing the hardest routes, and doing things I never thought were possible,” Mutter’s sister, sophomore Chloe Mutter said.
Mutter, a senior, is always pushing himself intellectually. He is planning to study biomedicine at University College London or Edinburgh University in the United Kingdom next year.
On top of being enrolled in five AP classes this year (two of which are sciences), he participated in this year’s TEDxLFHS event, giving a speech about the potential of lab-cultured meats.
Delving further into the world of biomedicine, Mutter spent his last summer doing an internship with Rush Hospital in Chicago, during which he was a clinical and research assistant.
His passion for medicine doesn’t end there—Mutter also attended the National Youth Leadership Forum for medicine at University of California, Berkeley. At this program, he was taught the basics of clinical medicine, learned emergency triage training, and completed an independent research project on lab-cultured meats.
Mutter also excels athletically; he has a passion for running, cycling, fencing, rugby, and Formula One. Last year, Mutter competed in the Junior Olympics for fencing as the highest unranked fencer. He also spends his weekends cycling upwards of 50 miles throughout the North Shore and watching Formula One races.
Mutter has been a member of Boys Varsity Track and Field for all four years of high school.
“He’s definitely the guy to pick up the slack when things get difficult, but he’s never too intense about it. He loves to win and his effort proves it. While being laid back and quite related, he still does shine as a lionhearted member of our team,” team captain and senior Nate Schmitt said.
Mutter is also an amazing person to be around who always supports his friends. Senior Scott DeNoble says that Mutter helped him throughout some family conflicts.
“Alex is a really great friend because whenever you are down, he is always there for you. He can even make you laugh when you didn’t think you could,” DeNoble said. “He is also one of the hardest working people I have met and is eager to reach his goals.”
