How to make money (without finding a job)

Ava Manelis, Editor

As high school students, it can be difficult to find ways to make money while still juggling our crazy schedules. Sports, extracurriculars, homework, and social lives don’t leave much room for making money for either little things like eating a meal out, or big things that you might have to save up for, like a computer or a car.

However, each day newer and easier ways to make money are being introduced. After talking to just a few students, I found that so many of them have took it upon themselves to find unique ways to make money as a student, and these ways may just help you to keep a little more cash in your pocket.

One way that I have personally used to make some money is to sell old clothes, CDs, games, or movies. Some great places to sell miscellaneous items are Amazon, Preloved, and Ebay, while some good clothing places are Poshmark and Mercari. I personally used Poshmark, and although it takes a decent amount of time to post all of your items on the app, it is definitely worth it for the sales that come.

For example, I posted all my old Lilly Pulitzer clothes from back in middle school and got a couple hundred bucks from it all. Poshmark creates a shipping label for you when someone buys your item, and all you have to do is throw it in the mailbox and watch the money roll in.

Junior Margo Thornberry and Charlotte Yehle make money in her free time by simply driving people to places (perks of having your license!) Thornberry drives people to the airport to get some cash and she got that job through her family friends, who she says “always ask me to drive instead of using Uber so they can have normal conversations and pay someone they actually know.” Yehle, on the other hand, drives a neighbor to gymnastics class once a week and earns some cash from doing so.

So, if you can find a person who doesn’t have their license and is in need of a ride, or a busy family who could use your help, driving people places is a great and easy way to make money.

Another thing that you can do to make some cash is online surveys. There are a ton of different websites that offer you money for simply using a bit of your time. Some of these websites that you simply need to make an account for are Inbox Pounds, Life Points, Opinion Outpost, Panel Opinion, Survey Bods, and Swag Bucks. I personally don’t know anyone whose made decent money off of these, but there are plenty of people on different social medias who have been able to do so. So, if you need a little extra cash and have a little extra time, check out these websites!

Junior Lexie Conley uses her extracurricular activities to earn some extra cash. I mean, if you’re gonna be doing your favorite activity every day, you might as well earn some money for it! She got started with making money from her sport by first getting some gigs related to dance, such as modeling for a dance business. She did some research and sent in an application to the business, and when she got the job, she would get a decent amount of money for each modeling gig she did for them! So, if you do an extracurricular, do some research and find out if you can make any money through the activity (refereeing, helping kids practice, modelling, or more!)

A final way to earn some money as a high schooler is, of course, babysitting. No taxes, making your own hours, and getting money for just hanging out with kids- what could be better? Finding a family that needs babysitting is probably the most difficult part of the job, and I personally put flyers in my neighbors mailboxes saying that I was interested in babysitting if I knew they had a family with kids. But, going up to their door and talking to them would be just as successful! I did this many years back when I was much younger, but it worked and I’ve been babysitting for one of the families for three years now!
