The Lake Forest Scouts went into Wednesday’s matchup against Lakes High School with plenty of confidence. The Scouts, having come off a convincing 12-8 victory over Arrowhead before Spring Break, may have been looking past this Lakes team to their matchup on Saturday with Culver Academy.

The first quarter started out strong, with the Scouts firing on all cylinders. Shots were being thrown at the opponents goal in a barrage. The first to hit the back of the net was a short throw in from Senior George Schoettle, after he easily juked past a Lakes defender. The second goal came moments later as Junior Nathaniel Field threw an absolute rocket into the top left corner of the goal.

Senior Danny Moorhead, coming off his impressive five goal performance in the season opener, added his own goal to the Scouts scoring party. Sophomore Richie Hoskins found the back of the net as well as the first quarter expired.

But soon the Scouts seemed to take their foot off the gas. Sloppy plays led to turnovers that started to let Lakes back into the game. A lone goal by Junior Charlie Altounian was enough to stop the momentum swing heading into halftime. The score was 5-1 and the Scouts knew they had to come out strong in the second half.

The Scouts got back in their groove soon after halftime. Moorhead netted one in the back of the net to start it off, his seventh on the season. This was followed up by Field, who was also able to get one in the back of the net. The Lakes team kept fighting back as the Scouts were constantly hindered by penalties that left them a man short on the field.

The Eagles were able to score a couple goals until Senior Bobby Winebrenner scored to give him his second of the season. Winebrenner wasn’t done, as he added the Scouts lone fourth quarter goal to give them the 9-4 victory.

“It was great to get the win obviously,” Winebrenner said “But there are definitely some things we need to iron out before two huge games Saturday and Monday.”

The Scouts will face Culver Academy Saturday and follow that up with Grayslake North on Monday.
