Scouts Defeat Lakes

Scouts Baseball was back in action this Saturday after a dominating performance against a solid Lane Tech team. In this go around, fans were treated to much of this same, this time Lakes Community High School felt the power of this Scouts team.

In the first inning, junior Matt Birtman got things started with a single. Before you know it, he steals second and senior Catcher/DH Brady Christoph hits a liner to center to bring Birtman home. Another run followed in the first, and the Scouts had a 2-0 lead early.

Lakes knew they’d have their hands full from the start, and with two of their D1 recruits sidelined, the Scouts took advantage.

After a three up, three down first inning from senior Peter Turelli accompanied by the stellar defensive play of junior Breck Nowik, the Scouts were in control. While the second inning wasn’t all that productive at the plate, Scout hitters managed to find a way on base, and from there looked to their base running skills as Lakes’ Reese Goodrich was getting wild on the mound, having a tough time finding the strike zone. After a three run inning, the Scouts were poised and energetic.

Although Turelli faltered a little in the third allowing two Lakes’ batters to score, he kept his composure. However, in the bottom of the fourth, the Scouts got themselves into a jam. The bases were suddenly loaded and with no outs, Turelli couldn’t find his groove. In a tough spot like this, it may be tough for some, but not Connor Morrison. The junior came out  with his lively left arm and struck out the first two batters he faced. The third grounded out and just like that, the Scouts got out of the jam.

The momentum shifted in the blink of an eye, and the Scouts were in business. Morrison looked unhittable in the top of fifth and set the offense up for success. The 5-2 margin increased to 9-2 with a four run inning in the bottom of the fifth.

From there, Brady Christoph closed out the game in the 7th for the Scouts to captured their 2nd straight win, both in dominating fashion, to get to 2-0 on the season. Here’s what Head Coach Ray Del Fava had to say about the win; “These early season games will go a long way to prepare us for our tough conference schedule. It’s great to see all the hard work pay off. The Tennessee trip will be a great experience for all of us.”

With that being said, this hot Scouts team heads down to Tennessee for their annual spring break trip to face some quality competition. Stay tuned to @LfhsBaseball and Twitter and The Forest Scout for game recaps.
