Boys Varsity Water Polo: Spring Sport Preview

Water polo is a fast paced and exciting team sport that is quickly gaining popularity. It can be described as a mix of basketball, hockey, and soccer. If this doesn’t seem challenging enough, it all takes place in the water. Starting this Monday, the Boys’ Varsity Water Polo Team held its tryouts, and the newly formed team is eagerly looking forward to their first game this Tuesday, March 5.

At Lake Forest High School, the team has had great success over the past few seasons. Senior Varsity Captain Jack Nemickas is extremely proud of all their wins and is anticipating many more in this upcoming season. According to him, the Scouts have “historically always been in the top half of their conference.” With lots of experience and new member talent coming to the pool this season, the team expects even more success in 2019.

This success will come led by Head Boys’ Varsity Water Polo Coach Tom Galla, who after coaching JV last year, is ready to bring his expertise to the next level. Varsity Captains Jack Nemickas, Greg Damidot, and John Wilford also are ready to help lead the team to victory in their thirty games this season. The boys are especially excited to play Buffalo Grove and Libertyville, as they are the biggest rivals to the LFHS team.

Coach Galla plans to coordinate community service opportunities and team bonding experiences along the duration of the season for the team. For now, the team loves bonding on the bus rides to away games. They bring tons of snacks in anticipation for big road games and listen to music excitedly. While away game bus rides are sometimes seen as a drag among sports teams at LFHS, many of the returning water polo players look forward to these bus rides.

Games this season should be super fun to watch. The team encourages all Scouts to follow their schedule and support the team. For more updates on Boys’ Varsity Water Polo follow their instagram @lfwapo! Go Scouts!
