Mrs. Laura Flangel

Every day, history teacher Mrs. Laura Flangel has a fun question ready for her students. Ranging from “How was your weekend?” to “What’s the best Thanksgiving food?” Mrs. Flangel finds a way to keep class engaging.

“My favorite part of her class was the daily attendance question because it really let me know her and my classmates and their lives outside of school,” junior Rachel Kaus said.

In her classroom, the walls are lined with newspaper clippings from current and life-changing events. Teaching US History and AP Seminar, Mrs. Flangel has to cover a variety of topics, and she tackles each with great enthusiasm and encouragement to her students.

“She’s really supportive and cares about each individual student and wants them to succeed,” sophomore Taylor Ross said.

Passionate about teaching, she refers to each student as a “scholar” and works to make them independent and knowledgeable workers.

Mrs. Flangel is also known for her “Today Sheet” that includes a schedule of each class and what needs to get done. Her organization makes it so when students are gone, they can easily catch up.

Even on a day when students don’t want to participate, Mrs. Flangel makes sure that she brings energy into the room. She makes sure to include necessary stretch breaks and mini discussions with friends to keep students engaged.

She not only cares about students’ academic lives, but she takes an interest in their personal lives, giving out extra credit if they choose to share a photo of them at Homecoming.

Another unique trait of Mrs. Flangel’s classes are that each day is never the same. The group discussions are always dependent on how the class is feeling, and what she feels would best benefit them.

“She clearly loves her job because she is so passionate and energetic everyday,” Kaus said.
