Mr. John Wanninger
Nicknamed “DJ Wang” or “Dubs,” English and film teacher Mr. Wanninger is known by his students for his intense hatred of Peeps Marshmallows and his unflinching ability to engage them through storytelling.
It might be the origin story of why he hates hollow chocolate bunnies or an update on the squirrels who hang around outside his window, but every day Mr. Wanninger’s hilarious stories can immediately raise the spirits of those in his classes.
“I could be having the worst morning but Mr. Wanniger’s stories always make me laugh,” junior Natalie Miller said. “Specifically, the stories about Maud the squirrel became an ongoing joke that I loved. Mr. Wanninger just effortlessly makes class so much more enjoyable.”
In addition to humorous storytelling and occasional showings of his favorite music videos, his passion for teaching is undeniable.
“It’s so obvious that he really loves what he’s doing,” Miller said. “I also can tell he just really wants his students to succeed.”
Mr. Wanninger shows his support for his students beyond academics in a multitude of ways. Whether it is participating in all of the student council spirit days or participating in the Day of Silence—a day dedicated to standing up against the harassment that students face because of their sexual orientation or gender identity—his devotion to his students constantly shines through.
His preaching of inclusivity and acceptance brings comfort to his students everyday; he always radiates a sense of warmth that you know you can trust.
Mr. Wanninger works hard to truly develop a strong connection with his students. As the sponsor for LFHS Alliance, the debate team, and a director for the theater program, he never fails to leave a lasting impression on those who have gotten to know him.
“Mr. Wanninger’s laugh could cure cancer. I’ve been working with him closely for four years, and I don’t know how I would have gotten through this year without seeing him in person—even if his smile is hidden behind a mask,” said senior Kailey Albus, who has starred in multiple productions directed by Mr. Wanninger.
“He is one of those people that I’m just grateful to know.”
