With a great team comes great coaching. And for more than 20 years, the incredibly successful boys golf team has been led by Mr. Jim Matheson, who has five State championships including last year’s remarkable comeback victory.

This season, Matheson has a lot to arrange in a shorter period of time, including organizing tryouts and matches, choosing a select group of players, and planning an enjoyable season for those on the team. All while following strict Covid-19 guidelines.

“All of coach’s games and practices are really fun” said senior Flynn Bradley. “He always makes the season really fun too.”

To go along that, Matheson also spends an  incredible amount of time preparing his team for every course they play. Whether it’s a 9-hole, after-school match or preparation for the State tournament, Matheson is always giving his team pointers about the course on the bus ride over.

“His experience with every golf course is unparalleled” said junior Jack Marshall.

Along with being one of the best coaches in the state, Matheson also helps out with other sports as much as he can. On Friday Nights, you can find him on the sidelines of the football games helping with the yardage markers. Matheson is also often recognized for being at the scorer’s table for both Boys and Girls basketball games.

As a teacher, Matheson is liked and respected by many students.

“I always enjoyed going to Mr. Matheson’s class freshman year,” said senior Rocco Royer. “He always found a way to make Drivers Ed. really fun and entertaining.”
