Mrs. Mary Greub

Whether you know her as Mary from Gerhard’s,  Momma Greub, or just Catherine’s mom, Mrs. Mary Greub is one special mother. 

Mary has owned and operated Gerhard’s Elegant European Desserts for the past 12 years, and co-owned it before with her (now ex) husband for another 12 years before that. Her entrepreneurial skills have truly shined as she has kept Gerhard’s a rotating door of kindness and positivity. Mary has connected her customers together for many different reasons. 

The most memorable connection was 25 years ago on a Saturday morning when five families were in need of a place to sit at Gerhard’s. There were not enough tables for the families, so Mary introduced everyone and sat them down together.

25 years later, the bond remains. They take vacations together, celebrate together, and still are best friends to this day. One of the moms happens to be (newly retired) Lake Forest High School’s Head of Public Relations, Anne Whipple.

 “Mary is not only a talented business owner, she is an amazing mother and friend. Mary brings joy and happiness to all who know her through her caring nature, smile and heart warming laugh. Mary is a real treasure – when I count my blessings, I count her twice,” Whipple said.

Close friends and customers, the Gianelli’s say, “Mary never fails to brighten everyone’s day as soon as they enter the shop, and her cappuccinos are almost as good as what you would get in Italy! We also love that Mary calls us ‘The Italians that sit at table 2!’” 

Mary is a single mother who has carried a heavy load over the years. She has raised a daughter successfully who is now a senior, continues to own a small family business, and has a three flat in Palatine. Mary’s daughter Catherine says, “My mom is a superhero! It’s insane how much she can get done and accomplish during a day. Her ability to multitask… superior!” she said jokingly. Catherine then added, “My mom is the most loving and caring woman out there. As she says, she would put her hands through fire for anyone!”

Mary and Catherine’s relationship is very open, just like their warm and inviting lifestyle. Long time friend, Jennifer Assmusen says “Mrs. Greub is always super inviting and welcomes me (or anyone) into her home with open arms and a nice “Hey sugar!” We’ve also had some pretty great adventures together, and she’s always really fun to be around! You can tell by the way she acts, she loves everyone for who they are and she makes it very clear how much she loves Catherine too.” 

Mary is just one of the many Lake Forest mom’s who deserves nothing but the best all the time, but especially on Mother’s Day!
