What motivated you to do a Ted Talk?
I love teaching people about things and TEDx talks have always fascinated me. When I was presented with the opportunity, I was so excited to apply.
Why did you choose your specific topic?
I have been in choirs since the fourth grade. Singing has always been one of my hobbies and I love to do it. I noticed that singing in a choir can have really positive effects on people, and I thought sharing that would be fun and educational to my audience.
What’s one thing you want people to know/appreciate about your subject?
It takes a lot of work to be in a choir, and once you get into it, it becomes such an amazing and important part of your life.
What makes a strong TED Talk?
Being casual yet professional is really vital during a TEDx talk. You want to connect with your audience while at the same time showing them you are passionate about your subject.
When did you first realize you were into your subject?
I started choir in fourth grade. In one of our songs, we had split into different parts, and I thought it was really cool how the two sections worked together to create something beautiful. From that moment, I knew I would always love singing with people and really getting to know them that way.
Who are some of the people who inspire you in your field?
My Great-Aunt Deanna is an opera singer. She has wonderful integrity and passion for what she does. She has a beautiful voice, and the first time I heard her sing was at my grand mother’s memorial service. I admired how she presented herself and the song she sang professionally yet emotionally. I strive to be like her whenever I sing. She presents herself with a great work ethic, and that is what makes her so inspiring.
How did you prepare for your talk?
To prepare, I made a document to make the agenda for my speech (which helped a lot) and wrote my script based on that. Then, I used notecards with the basic talking points I have to help me stay on track when memorizing my TEDx talk.
How nervous are you to speak in front of so many people?
I am pretty nervous, considering I am the youngest and the other kids have much more experience than me. However, I will have friends and family in the crowd, so I know that I am supported. I am very excited, too, for this is something very new for me and I know it is definitely something I’d like to do again.
