Kelly Dexter

When most people think of accounting, they’ll tend to think of numbers, spreadsheets, and, well, boredom. But when someone steps foot in one of Ms. Kelly Dexter’s Accounting Honors classes, they’ll see a room full of lively discussion, engaging lessons, and enthusiastic students.

Senior Carson Ward praised Ms. Dexter, saying, “There’s never a boring day in Ms. Dexter’s class. Accounting isn’t the most exciting of topics, but you can tell [Ms.] Dexter puts a lot of effort into making her lesson plans interesting and memorable.”

Along with Accounting Honors, Ms. Dexter has taught Accounting 1, Consumer Ed, Business Tech, and Business Entrepreneurship, while also sponsoring Future Business Leaders of America.

She starts each class with a “bellringer,” which is a question usually related to current events to help her students become aware of what’s going on in the world. These bellringers provoke animated discussion and motivate students to be excited to get to class on time each day.

While Ms. Dexter does a top-notch job teaching her curriculum, she always makes sure to prepare her students for college and life beyond high school by showing videos and giving mini-lectures on the life skills and discipline that are essential for success.

“I really just signed up for Accounting Honors to figure out what ‘business’ really was because I’m probably going to major in it,” said former LFHS student and Dexter protégé, Andrew St. Amand. “Ms. Dexter’s class turned out to be amazing. We got to run a hot dog stand, play Monopoly, get introduced to the business world, and we also became better people thanks to her guidance.”

From using her extensive teaching experience to make sure she’s creating the best classroom atmosphere to imparting college advice from her career as a Division-1 basketball player, Ms. Dexter never fails to provide a memorable experience in her class.

She may say she is just teaching business classes, but Ms. Dexter is doing so much more than that by grooming future difference-makers in our world.
