If you found yourself in close proximity to the Metcalf Athletic foyer this past Monday, you might have been captivated by a sweet and juicy smell. Students leaving the fieldhouse and Competition Gym shortly after 3rd period were stopped dead in their tracks by the mouthwatering smell of slow-cooking chili from the 17th annual athletic department chili cook off. The competition that was originated in 2000 now features the best of the best chili in the school. This year, the highly competitive contest featured 24 entries, but featured only one winner. P.E. teacher Mr. Tom Soprych walked away with bragging rights this year, and the grand prize trophy that he now proudly displays on his desk for all of his compatriots to see. Soprych says an honorable mention should go out to Mr. Jim Athanas who made a meat chili containing Italian sausage and bacon that was “to die for.”
Soprych revealed that he started cooking up his –now award-winning– chili on Saturday by smoking the “point” of a brisket. Later he “shredded” the brisket and added the contents to his crockpot. From there is anyone’s guess. Soprych says he just used a “traditional chili recipe” adding in spices as he felt necessary. When I asked Soprych if he used a special family recipe he said, “ There’s no recipe, it just seemed to work out.” Humble words coming from a talented chef. Although this is just Soprych first win, he seems intent on protecting his title next year.
