Chargers Head to Los Angeles, Leave San Diego Behind

Chargers Head to Los Angeles, Leave Behind San Diego

As a big time sports fan, it is always in the back of our minds what it would be like if one of my favorite teams shipped out to a different city. Would I still support the team? Would I pity the organization for the rest of my life? Or, would I just want to take action against the owner of the team. Today, for the second time in one year, an NFL team has declared that they would be moving their organization to the city of Los Angeles. Owner Dean Spanos of the San Diego Chargers ended his 56 year run with the team and has decided to move the organization back to the city that hosted their inaugural season. This move has left some fans in tears and the future of some other NFL organizations in question.

As heartbreaking as it may be for the community of San Diego, this move had to be done. In November, Dean Spanos tried to get the funding for a new stadium in San Diego that the organization was desperate for, but failed when taxpayers voted against it. The Chargers will now join the Los Angeles Rams (previously the St. Louis Rams) in Southern California, then will move to Inglewood in 2018 when their new stadium is officially complete. This year the Chargers had yet another disappointing season going 5-11, resulting in the firing of their head coach at the end of the season.

As expected, the loyal Chargers fans haven’t responded well to the news that their organization will be moving to a different city. Early this morning some Chargers executives found that the front door of their headquarters had been egged. Some fans who were interviewed by the San Diego Tribune said that the Chargers were like family to them and that they were disappointed with the owner.  Others, however, took an optimistic approach, referencing that it would wake up their city in hopes that if any other San Diego professional organization ever wanted to relocate it would be prevented by the taxpayer’s vote.

With the NFL relocation drama becoming one of the hottest stories once again in the sporting world, it also presents some speculation whether the Oakland Raiders may be relocating soon as well. With the Chargers and Rams now in Los Angeles, it seems unlikely that they would move there, but Las Vegas, Nevada has been brought up as a potential location. A decision on the future of the Raiders is likely to come in the next couple of weeks.

The Chargers will play their first game in Los Angeles since the 1960 NFL season this year in a soccer stadium that only seats 27,167 people. In 2019 they will play their first game in the new lavish Inglewood stadium.
