Nicky Deitche

Upon entering her 10:30 a.m. Outdoor Adventures Google Meet, Nicky Deitche, fully engulfed in her comforter, greeted the class with a quiver in her voice.

“My heater broke, and it’s 54 degrees in my house,” she said through her gritty smile, “but I’m doing great!”

This ability to push through discomfort is not out of character for the exuberant senior; just a week prior, she carried her laptop into 15-degree weather simply to show the class her beloved car, Francis.

The vehicle was decorated in typical Nicky fashion: jewelry hanging on the head supports, keychains decorating the dashboard, and an exterior sticker of a life-size Pope Francis waving to the passing traffic.

After seeing the Pope, it was impossible to have a bad day,” classmate Bridget Seymour said.

Deitche is no stranger to putting on a show for others. An avid member of LFHS Music, she spends a large chunk of her second semester hidden in the RMA pit, prepping with her ensemble to orchestrate whatever musical is taking the stage. Impressively, from the depths of the auditorium basement, Deitche can make her jokes (and the laughs that follow them) ring louder than her violin strings.

Even from the computer screen, Deitche manages to charm her peers with her award-winning laugh and her slightly concerning stories about how her day is going; if you haven’t seen her cry in class, you likely haven’t had her in class.

“Nicky is the type of person everyone wants to get to know,” senior Grace Benson said. “She is super energetic and hilarious, and she’s good at becoming friends with anyone.”

Her Outdoor Adventures teacher Mr. Ray Werner agrees, saying that her “effortless enthusiasm encourages others to be themselves.”

“I love her silliness and playful personality,” Werner said, “but I also know that when she’s working with others, Nicky’s going to take care of her peers before she takes care of herself.”
