Haunted Vacations with Mrs. Clark

While she says that she doesn’t fully believe in ghosts, Mrs. Clark reminisces on her unexplained encounters from two separate trips to Europe. When traveling internationally, she says that her rule is that she and her husband, Tony, must stay in a hotel built at least 300 years ago. Her first story takes place in a hotel in Scotland.

“Every time Tony would leave the room, the room sort of took on a chill. I don’t know why. Maybe he left the door open. You know, who knows? But he would come back, and the room was great!

So, the next morning we were driving off to the next stop. I drove us 900 miles around Scotland all the way from Edinburgh, and all the way up and down again. And so we were on the road a lot. But anyway, Tony took the bags down.

I thought I would go to the bathroom quickly before heading off on the road again. And the room was kind of odd in that there was a bedroom, and then there was an interior hallway. It went to a really nice big bathroom, with a big tub, and so forth. And so I started down the hallway, which was fairly narrow, and I realized there was something behind me. And so I sort of glanced over my shoulder, and I don’t know what it was. It was big, the head was to the ceiling, but it was a low ceiling, and there was no face. And broad shoulders in all dark. And there is no sound. And I mean I wasn’t afraid of it, or anything. I turned around, thinking I should check this out! and it was gone! So maybe it was a trick of the eyes, or something, but I don’t know!”

Mrs. Clark’s second experience comes from a trip to England.

“And the only other time, Tony and I were in this gorgeous manor house in England. We were in Devonshire, and we had the master suite. And it was gorgeous, had a big bed, and looked out over the small stream that went through the property and off to the fields and so forth. It was just gorgeous. In fact we played games they had out on the gaming field. So we had a great time there!

‘Somebody’s digging out there!’

When we both went to bed, we were tired. Again, I was driving. So we fell sound asleep. And I woke up in the middle of the night hearing a whistle: like somebody was whistling. And I thought, well that’s odd, because it was Summer, and I didn’t think the heat was on because radiators whistle. So I went over to the window where the radiator was, and I looked at the radiator, and then I realized the whistling was behind me. It was somewhere between the end of the bed and the window. And so I thought, Well! There was nothing to do, so I just went back to bed!

I was lying there in bed, you know, mulling it over. And Tony got up, and he went to the other window, and open the window and looked outside, down into the flower bed. We were on the second floor, but there were very high ceilings. And he turned around and said, ‘Somebody’s digging out there!’ and I said, ‘Digging?’. ‘Digging! They’re digging!’

And so I walked over and we were both leaning out the window and sure enough – there was somebody digging! But there was nobody there!

We asked the next day at the office if there was anyone doing any gardening last night. And they said ‘no…’. And that was kind of fun because we both talked about it, and we both said ‘well, that was certainly a noisy night!’”
