With schools across the country shut down due to COVID-19, students have lost some of the most important components of their education: The ability to actively learn in a classroom setting and access to the resources needed for an education.

Junior Kate Milliman has spent the past six weeks volunteering at SaLT Serving’s Love 2 Learn program, which is devoted to helping kids with their education.

Every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Milliman tutors kids around the North Shore area who don’t have the resources at home  to get the most out of remote learning.

“Kate is extremely eager to help others, especially these kids. No matter the circumstance, she is always ready to participate,” volunteer junior Elizabeth Casper said.

The Love 2 Learn program is designed to provide an extra boost of education. Volunteers are paired up with one to two kids from grade levels kindergarten and up. The kids then get the opportunity to work face-to-face on any types of problems, such as understanding the homework or communicating with a teacher.

“It’s incredible to see how much of a positive impact someone has when they step up and help not just their own community, but communities all around,” said Ida Fiore, co-founder of SaLT Student Travel. “It’s been very hard to find people who are willing to give up their time in order to help others, especially with the risks of COVID-19.”

On top of school work, activities, and chores, Milliman still continues to show up for extra volunteering with the SaLT Serving organization and participates in the Shop N Drop program, where volunteers gather, sort, and distribute foods and other basic necessities such as toilet paper and water to over 90 needy families in the surrounding area.

All of the hard work and devotion Milliman presents isn’t just shown through her community service, but also through her friendships. When asked about Milliman, junior Elissa Meneely said, “The thing I love most about her is how much she is there for you when you need her the most.”

Milliman does an amazing job of reminding everyone that it’s still extremely important to help others dispute everything being so different. She emphasizes the point that now more than ever people need to work together, help one another and support each other.

“No matter what she is doing she always gives one hundred and ten percent and is constantly making others smile,” Meneely said.
