Mrs. Natasha Mah

Playfully referred to as “Mama Mah”, music educator Mrs. Natasha Mah holds a special place in the hearts of many LFHS performers, and her efforts to comfort them in these trying times certainly do not go unnoticed.

“Mrs. Mah emailed me recently just to ask how I’ve been handling the quarantine,” sophomore Amelia Myers said. “I broke into a smile when I saw the notification pop up on my phone; it felt like my own mom was checking in on me to make sure I was okay.”

As the school’s lead piano accompanist, Mah has been an integral part of Music Department for years. She primarily serves as choral director Mr. Tim Haskett’s right hand (wo)man, constantly following his every move while simultaneously keeping him in check with the music. Beyond her duties at the piano, Mah directs the holiday Bel Canto Singers, coaches students through audition material, and remains the friendly face who greets each choir student as they come into class.

“Mrs. Mah deserved all the credit in the world,” senior Laine Gamrath said. “Not only for the amount of dedication she puts into her job, but also for the effort she puts into her relationships with the students. She is able to teach with the wisdom of a seasoned director, yet she’ll chat with you after class like your closest friend.”

But Mah’s tender nature extends far beyond the walls of the choir room; she has a 10 year old boy of her own who often accompanies her to LFHS performances and functions. Her son is loved by many students and instructors in the music department, and his passions for music, learning, and telling hilarious jokes perfectly reflect the kind of positive influence his mother has had on him.

“It is so easy to see how great of a mother Mrs. Mah is just by looking at her son,” junior Mary Clayton said. “He has so much personality and intelligence at such a young age–it’s clear that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Great mothers are often characterized by their compassion, their wisdom, and their unconditional love for their children. Whether you see it through the way she raises her son or you feel it on a personal level, Mah makes it apparent to each and every person she meets that she truly cares about their well being. While the empty halls of LFHS certainly miss many faces at the moment, hers is one that students are hoping to see soon before they lose the chance.

“I have made such a special connection with Mrs. Mah throughout my time at the high school; to see that relationship be taken away by a pandemic would be absolutely heartbreaking,” senior Katie Finnegann said. “I hope that future students learn to appreciate her as much as I do.”

“She is without a doubt a hidden gem of LFHS.”
