In this series, I will look at random days of each month to inform readers about important events that occurred on that exact day in years prior.

For this “On This Day” we are taking a look at history on February 26.

On Feb. 26, 1870, in New York City, the first pneumatic-powered subway line was opened to the public. (Beach Pneumatic Transit)

In 1919 the Grand Canyon in Arizona was established as a national park with an act of the US Congress.

In 2009, the Pentagon reversed an 18- year policy of not allowing media to cover people returning from war dead. The reversal allowed some media coverage- with family approval.
