The awkward love life of a teenager can often be summed up with sloppy first kisses, obsessing over the guy you sit next to in math class, or the fear of being rejected to the school dance by the girl you’ve been talking to.

Discussing your love life, or seemingly non-exist one, with anyone but your best friends can feel like a taboo subject. However, it’s also a topic that a large majority of students at LFHS and teenagers in general can relate to.

Whether you haven’t had your first kiss yet, or you’ve been in a serious relationship for all of high school, everyone can still find some way to connect with one universal subject that surrounds us in society every day: love.

Which best describes your teenage love life?

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, students at LFHS were asked to anonymously share awkward, funny, or cute love stories from their own lives with The Forest Scout.

“My first kiss with my boyfriend happened in my friend’s driveway at the end of freshmen year. We leaned in and did it spontaneously. When we broke away, all he said was, ‘Wonderful weather we’re having.’ Later that night, he was like, ‘I know this is an unusual time to ask you out considering we just kissed.’” And I responded, ‘Well sometimes dessert comes before dinner.’”

“My first boyfriend would always eat the orange flavored Tic Tacs, so now, three years later, I can’t even eat Tic Tacs without imagining the taste of his mouth.”

“So it was our first time hanging out by ourselves. We were sitting on his couch watching a movie and the movie finished and I told him I had to go. So I started grabbing my things, and he said, ‘I have a present for you,’ and kissed me. I was so caught off guard that I said ‘Oh,’ and we never hung out again.”

“I’ve been in my first serious relationship with my boyfriend for about four and a half months now. On our first date, we went to the Botanic Gardens and had a mini Polaroid photo shoot. We both sing together a lot. Sometimes I’ll play my ukulele and we’ll just sing songs.”

“So a few years ago I liked this guy, but my sister would always throw subtle shade at him, so I couldn’t tell her I liked him. One day, my sister’s boyfriend asked me why I wasn’t dating him. In an attempt to hide how I actually felt, I burst out, ‘He looks like a mozzarella stick!’”

“The boy I liked asked me to go see the new Spider-Man movie with him, but I was so excited that I didn’t even watch the movie. I was texting my friends every detail of the date. When he dropped me off at my house, he walked me up to the door, and we kissed after we hugged each other. 6th grade was lit.”

“Here’s a tip from prior experience. When you break up with someone and neither of you drive, be sure to meet somewhere accessible to both of you so that as soon as you break the news, your parents can pick you up and skkrt you out of there as quickly as possible.”

“To be honest, I missed my ex’s cat more than them when we broke up.”

“When I was a quiet and awkward freshmen, I had the mortifying experience of receiving a Vocal Valentine in class from who I thought was my crush. It wasn’t until I thanked them later that day for it and they had no clue what I was talking about when the embarrassment of the situation really kicked in.”

“On the ride home after leaving the homecoming dance my freshmen year, I was suddenly hit by a huge wave of nausea, except I was sitting in the middle seat with my date on one side and my friend on the other. I blurted out that I thought I was going to puke, climbed over my date, and stuck my head out of the window of the moving car.”

“Before I moved here, I took this girl on a date to a place where you can paint pottery. Neither of us had our licenses yet, so I had my dad drop us off and plan on picking us up in a few hours. The actual painting of the pottery only took around half an hour, so we had quite a bit of time to kill. We walked around and it basically ended with me having my first kiss behind a Kroger supermarket.”

“In middle school, my best friend and I used code names to talk about our crushes in secret. For each crush, we would usually name them after a piece of fruit. For example, Mango and Lemon were the hottest guys in 8th grade.”

“For some reason, one day, this girl decided that she wanted to be my fake girlfriend, would hold hands with me and pretend to be in love with me. I found it weird but wasn’t completely opposed to it, so I went along with it. At a certain point, she started getting very close with this other guy, sitting with him at lunch and walking together, talking all the time. Eventually, I assumed our fake relationship was over, because she stopped acting crazy in love with me and started acting real and nice, and I started developing feelings for her. Eventually, the other guy and her got closer and closer, until eventually they started dating, and I was left alone, with the roles reversed.”

“I wish I could have some funny, weird story about a crush. Truth is that I’m the weird one. I like to think I’m quirky, but you can only get so far when you’re a ginger.”
