Scouts Volleyball Looks to Grow During the Season

Auto+Draft+198

This week, the girls volleyball team played back to back games on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Scouts (1-1) faced off against the Glenbrook South Titans (4-1) and the Highland Park Giants (0-1). Both teams came out strong against the young Scouts. Lake Forest enters their 2018 season with many new players. The team lost six key players which created room for some talented young players to step up. Only beginning their season, the Scouts are adjusting to the new team and finding their groove.

Tuesday night, the Scouts started their match against the GBS Titans. The Titans took the early lead and secured the first game (14-25). The Titans are a disciplined team with star junior outside hitter Kendall Smith. For the Scouts, Sophomore Caroline Graham led the team with 4 kills and 6 digs. The Scouts gained some confidence in the second game as the scoring gap thinned. They fought hard, but the Scouts could not get the job done against GBS, losing the game 22-25 and the match 2-0.

Two key players stepped up for the Wednesday night game against Highland Park. Outside hitter Caroline Graham led the Scouts with 7 kills and 2 blocks and Libero Kelly McCaskey added 9 digs. Lake Forest fought in two close games against the Giants, but it was not enough to come away with a win. The Giants had tremendous skill from their outsides which the Scouts had trouble defending. The Scouts had some good runs, but could not maintain their intensity for the entirety of the game.

Even though they lost, Lake Forest is looking to bounce back this weekend as they travel to Champaign, IL., to play five games against teams from all over the state.

Senior Captain Bee Ward has confidence in her team for the rest of the season:

“This is still the beginning of our season and we are all trying to figure out how to play well together. Once we begin to mesh, our season will really take off.”

As the team heads to Champaign, IL., this Friday afternoon, they are excited to take on multiple matches and are ready to compete.
