Scouts Roll Past IHSA Regional Competition

Scouts+Roll+Past+IHSA+Regional+Competition+2

ZION, Ill- For the second Tuesday in a row, the Lake Forest boys golf team took to the course for postseason play. With the North Suburban Conference victory under their belts, the Scouts headed out looking for yet another IHSA Regional championship to line the wall of the East Campus foyer.

This year, Shepherd’s Crook Golf Club played host to the IHSA Regional finals as teams from all around the area, including Mundelein and Carmel Catholic, headed north to Zion, Illinois. While the temperature was unseasonably warm, a strong southwest wind whipped hard at Shepherd’s Crook. The wind, dry greens, and tough pin locations led to a treacherous and difficult round of golf for all the players.

The par five 14th was the most difficult hole on the day as it highlighted the tough conditions at “The Crook,” as the players call it. The 14th played at 650 yards directly into the strong autumn breeze. For senior Scott Frevert, it took him a driver, a three wood, and a three iron just to get up to the green. “The conditions were just brutal,” said Frevert. “The pin positions and the wind made for an impossible course today.” Junior Danny Fisher battled the same issues as he played driver, three wood, and another three wood just to come up short of the green as well.

Scouts Roll Past IHSA Regional CompetitionEven though the conditions were difficult for the Scouts, they were difficult for every team on Tuesday. Normally, the quality high school players tend to hang around the low to mid 70s for their 18 hole scores. However, the Scouts’ Scott Frevert fired the low ball on Tuesday with a score of 78 (+6) which is quite uncommon. Frevert did indeed fire the best score in regionals to take home medalist honors, but it was not pretty and not normal. The Scouts had the top three individual scores on the day as Jed Thomas fired a round of 79 (+7) and Danny Fisher came in at 80 (+8). Behind the strong play of its top three, Lake Forest rounded out its score with an 82 (+10) from senior Michael Seaman. Even though the four scores were high, the Scouts were able to finish in first place as a team with a score of 319 strokes. Carmel Catholic and Mundelein came in second and third respectively as they both qualified for sectionals next week as well. With a long and tiring day of golf complete, the Scouts, Corsairs, and Mustangs all punched their tickets for the next stop on the playoff journey.

With yet another regional title in hand, the Scouts will now travel to notoriously hazardous Bittersweet Golf Club on Monday, October 9, for IHSA Sectional competition. Sectionals will feature a handful of quality teams as Stevenson, Highland Park and others all battle to be one of the best three teams in order to qualify for the IHSA State Championships at The Den in Bloomington, Illinois. Nothing will be easy from here on out for the Scouts, but one thing is for sure: this Lake Forest team has a lot of talent and is capable of being the best team in the state. Of course, the big question is whether or not the Scouts will show up when it matters most and the pressure is on.
