Scouts Celebrate Senior Day in Three Sports

Scouts+Split+Wednesday+Night+Doubleheader

LAKE FOREST, Ill– While many kids want high school to last forever, the reality is someday those four great years will eventually come to an end. The same can be said in sports, as each year teams celebrate senior day for the final regular season home game. Senior day can be bittersweet, as it signals the end, but also the beginning of what will be bright futures for all of our student-athletes. On Wednesday, Lake Forest High School had three varsity teams in action for their final regular season games on the fields and gyms that have been the homes of so many student athletes over the past four years. Boys soccer, field hockey, and girls volleyball all took to the courts and the field to pay tribute to their fellow seniors one final time.

The boys soccer team hosted a highly ranked and talented Glenbrook North team that was ready to spoil senior night for the Scouts. Unfortunately, two quick goals from Glenbrook North put them ahead 2-0, and the Scouts could not recover. Despite the disappointing start, halftime was filled with honors and celebrations from the incredible careers of the players. The soccer team had eight National Honor Society members and boasted a high number of Academic All-Conference honorees. While the Scouts ended up falling 4-0 in the game, they knew the night meant more than just a single score. It was a reflection on the great achievements made in the classroom and on the field over the last four years. Fortunately, the season did not end here for the Scouts as they will host Hersey High School this Saturday, October 14, in the first round of the IHSA playoffs. Be sure to support the Scouts one final time at 12 pm on Saturday.

Across town, in the East Campus competition gym, the girls volleyball team was hosting the Mundelein Mustangs for their senior night game. After a difficult year record-wise, the Scouts were looking to make the most of senior day and turn their season around. The Scouts fed off of the senior day energy and managed to down the Mustangs in just two sets. Riding the wave from the win on senior night, the Scouts will finish off the regular season at Waukegan, and then begin a playoff run against Crystal Lake South on October 23.

The final senior day game was back at a cold and rainy Varsity Field as the girls field hockey team hosted Naperville North High School. For the girls, this would mark the final home game for many successful careers in the field hockey program. This group of girls captured a state title just a year ago as juniors, are on pace for another this year, and have done so much to support the program and the community. The game featured six goals, which all came from senior players. Senior and Forest Scout contributor Ava Caputo scored three goals in the game giving her a hat trick in her final game at Varsity Field. In addition, seniors Elisabeth Domittner, Casey Slingerland and Sophie Metzger all scored goals in their final home game as well. Even more impressive for the Scouts, Domittner and fellow senior Catherine Nicholson plan to continue their field hockey careers in college at Bates College and the University of Iowa respectively. Overall, the 2017 regular season was another successful one for the seniors, and head coach Catanzaro who has built the field hockey program into a consistent winner.

Even though their high school careers are coming to a close, Wednesday was quite the day to remember for all of the senior student athletes. Each and every one of them now has a special memory and the chance to reflect on some exceptional careers over the last four years. Be sure to stay tuned for updates regarding all of these teams and their playoff runs.
