This year’s girls track team comes in with key returning varsity runners, including Brett Chody, Emma Milburn, Anna Bazel, AnnaFran Curry, Camila Orbzut, Grace Bentley, and Sydney Leonardi. With the addition of former Libertyville track and current cross country coach and Waukegan cross country coach Christine Zucker looks to jump right into training and strive to repeat as NSC champions in her first year with the team. Track kicks off their season with three indoor meets before spring break where they will look to hone their skills before they head outdoors for the rest of the season. The team kicks off practice on Thursday, February 7 and look to prepare for the upcoming season.
New head coach Christine Zucker ran collegiately at Kansas, and, as mentioned prior, coaches cross country at Waukegan. Coach Brad Naughton is the jumps coach for the Scouts, and Zucker will work with the distance runners, including the 4x800m team of Emma Milburn, Sydney Barber, Grace Bentley, and Courtney Schmidt. Potentially, the Scouts add Chody to that team, a group that qualified for the IHSA State meet a season ago, and this relay’s potential is boundless. Their goal, of course, is to win the NSC again this year, which would be back-to-back titles for the Scouts. Emma Milburn also qualified for the state meet a season ago in the 800m run. Chody, who sat out last season with a stress fracture in her back, is looking for her senior year to be the most accomplished yet. As a sophomore, she finished second in the NSC, earning a school-record in the process, and qualified for state in the 3200m run and finished 6th overall.
The 4x100m team that included Haley Click, AnaFran Curry, Camila Orbzut, and Sydney Leonardi loses only Click, now a runner at Michigan, from a season ago. The aforementioned quartet set a school record last season and also qualified for the state meet. The fourth spot for the team is yet to be determined in talking with sources close to the team, but a younger runner is likely to fill the void.
