Girls Tennis Wins Deerfield Invitational

Scouts+1

This weekend the Girls Varsity Tennis Team took home some hardware in the Deerfield Invitational. The Scouts looked to take home their first tournament win of the year as they entered very confident after their previous two sweeps against Mundelein and Lake Zurich. They ended up with five out of the six brackets going in their favor, which in turn placed them in first.

The singles grouping was composed of three brackets which each contained eight players from schools such as New Trier, Evanston, Deerfield, etc. With no surprise, Kiley Rabjohns and Alex Slomba were slotted in the number one and two brackets. Rabjohns managed to put up a flawless second match against the Emma Proctor, Senior at Oak Park and River Forest High School, propelling her into the championship match. Both Slomba and Rabjohns won all three of their matches in straight sets placing them in first. Gabbie Jakubowski also made a return to this week’s singles lineup after the clinic she put on versus Mundelein. Jakubowski joined her other teammates in taking down all of her opponents in straight sets to take first place. The Scouts’ singles grouping set up the rest of the team big, as they won three out of the six brackets before doubles even stepped onto the court.

The tournament was in the same format for doubles just as it was for singles, with three brackets consisting of eight teams. Each team had to win three matches if they were going to call themselves champions, and that’s exactly what the Scouts did. The pairing of Olivia Wheldon and Nika Belova were once again placed together after the chemistry that they displayed during last week’s match against the Mustangs. The duo continued went on to defeat everyone who stood in their way of first. Salma Alsikafi and Emily Asmussen made their second appearance playing together in bracket two, ending up with first place, medals around their necks and the fifth win for the Scouts. The final doubles pairing of Clara and Lili Goshgarian came up short in the championship match against the New Trier’s Zaban and Woodrick.

The Scouts finished the day on top of the rest with the majority of the brackets falling their way. They have looked very strong this past week and are gaining momentum as the tough scheduled season gears up. The Scouts, now 3-1, are eager to face Warren High School at West Campus tomorrow.
