2013 Lake Forest High School graduate George Quall was awarded as DePauw University’s inaugural recipient of the Fellows Award for Excellence in Leadership for the 2016-17 school year. Quall, who was an excellent student and Varsity basketball captain at LFHS, is graduating from DePauw with a degree in Economics this spring.
Per correspondence with a University representative, the Fellows Award for Excellence in Leadership is bestowed upon the senior student who best “exemplifies the ideals and mission of the program and has exhibited these through a record of: academic achievement, leadership, service and impact on the Program and University, and sincere dedication to the field of management, business, or entrepreneurship.”
Last summer, Quall spent his time investing in his future at an internship in Chicago, and this fall, he hit campus in Greencastle, Indiana in stride with all that he learned. In fact, he developed and established a Summer Investment Banking Workshop that involved mentoring students, developing programming, recruiting alumni to conduct resume reviews and mock interviews, as well as organizing a Chicago investment banking trip.
Needless to say, Quall’s academic resume speaks for itself. However, in speaking with Quall, he mentioned that the seeds of his leadership were sewn via various avenues of the LFHS curriculum and the school’s Varsity Basketball Program. “Coach LaScala was a fantastic example of a leader to me,” Quall expressed. “He told me in my sophomore year that ‘how you do anything is how you do everything,’ whether it was class or practice.” Though LaScala’s sentiments resonated with George then, he went on to explain how much those tenets of wisdom from Lake Forest Basketball’s leader would go on to impact his life.
“He always told me that the book on you is being written every day, so you ought to bring the best version of yourself every day. How can you expect the best from others if you don’t give them the best version of yourself.”
Naturally, George’s impactful leadership style translated well to DePauw where the Director of the Management Fellows Program and his professor, Mr. Jeffrey Gropp, had the following to say about George via a press release by the University .
“The inaugural recipient of this award is an exceptional student that, in a very short period of time, has gained my utmost respect and admiration. This student is intelligent, yet humble, and possesses and extraordinary work ethic…He is a great student and a model Management Fellow. More importantly, he is an exceptional person and I am immensely proud of this young man.”
As a benefit of the award, George Quall will receive $1,000 from the University. In an academic year in which many students have chosen to attend DePauw to further their education, Quall has set forth an impressive legacy for the Class of 2017 to follow. Quall’s younger brother Louis is a freshman at LFHS.
