The Emma Effect: Analyzing the personality traits of people with the same name

The+Emma+Effect

The name Emma has been among the top four most popular baby names for the past sixteen years, so it should come as no surprise that when I added it up, I found out there are 12 Emma’s at our school alone. My name is, of course, Emma and one of my best friends names is Emma. She and I are always finding subtle similarities between each other that we don’t share with other people. I wondered if these similarities were merely because we were friends, or if it was due to our namesake . Thus, I sent out a survey to the 12 Emma’s in our school to test my theory that people with the same name share some similar characteristics as well.

I asked the group of Emmas to answer a few questions with the goal of trying to see if there are any personality similarities. I asked the girls a few vague questions: favorite color, favorite restaurant, favorite place to shop, or what they would bring with them on a deserted island. Then I asked a few more personal questions like how do they relieve stress, or what the first thing is on their bucket list.

The results that came back showed a definite correlation.

Favorite color- 80% same color (blue)

Favorite food- 60% pasta

Favorite restaurant- 60% downtown restaurants

Favorite store- 60% same store (zara)

Ways to relieve stress- 40% working out

If you could live anywhere..- 80% out of the country (spain, paris, australia, london)

What you would bring on a deserted island..- 60% a person

Favorite holiday- 80% Christmas

Uniform vs no uniform- 60% no uniform

Skydiving vs bungee jumping- 75% skydiving

Bucket list- 60% want to travel the world

Dogs vs cats- 100% dogs

Romantic-comedy vs action movie- 80% romantic-comedy

Money vs love- 80% love

Cardio vs machines- 75% cardio

Every category except one showed a majority of the Emmas having the same opinion. This similarity could be credited to the fact that we are all teenage girls growing up in the same community, or simply caused by growing up with the same name. My conclusion from the data I got from the survey is that there is a definite correlation between the Emmas (or anyone with the same name) but it is not universal.
