Oh boy, the saddest of days is upon us.
Enjoy your last month of waddling around and making new friends. Disney recently announced on March 29, 2017 that Club Penguin will be closing forever. If you used to be a regular on the online game, then hearing this news may have made your heart drop. I know when I heard about this I was saddened to the core.
First made in 2005, Club Penguin quickly rose to popularity for kids between the ages of 6 and 12. It is a virtual penguin community. Fellow penguins can chat, dance, play and party together. 12 years later and the creators have decided to end the virtual computer game and turn it into an app, Club Penguin Island. The app, though, just won’t be the same.
Kids who grew up in the first decade of the 21st century, like myself, know how much this was a part of our childhood. And that’s why this news is so tear-jerking for the older teens and young adults.
The crowd that is mostly upset doesn’t even play it anymore, but the thing that upsets me and my peers is that one of our favorite childhood memories is fading away forever. It’s almost as if this is a sign that our childhood is officially coming to an end. The thought of growing up and having real responsibilities is a scary, as I’m going to miss only having to worry about tipping the iceberg (real or myth?).
Even though we are all “too old” to be playing Club Penguin well into our high school years, why not play it one more time just for kicks. Say your farewells to your childhood penguin because on March 29th all accounts will be deleted. I believe everyone should take a moment to pause to look back on all the memories you’ve made with your penguin. Whether it is your best friend you made from across the country or the penguin boyfriend that you shared dates with at the Pizza Parlor. RIP to Eggman268, for he was my first and only boyfriend…
As this may come as a slap in the face to the cold, harsh reality of growing up, make this an exciting thing and look at it with a positive mind. One chapter of our lives is coming to a close and a new chapter is starting. This chapter will be better than the last.
Remember all the crazy things you made your penguin do? Now is the time to become that penguin and have the time of your life with this new chapter. So don’t let this news upset you too much for it is in the past now and the future is waiting for you. But if you hold on to the past, how are you supposed to grab the future?
So an official goodbye to Club Penguin: Goodbye Club Penguin and so long to my childhood shenanigans. You’re only memories to me and I’ll always remember you in adulthood.
Sincerely, Brittany Theo aka PinkGirl8888.
