It’s a rare thing in a boys tennis IHSA Sectional final singles match to see two young men from the same school squaring off for the crown. Yet, that is exactly what happened Monday night in Gurnee as Lake Forest’s Will Zordani faced off against #2 singles player Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk when all other singles players from competing schools were defeated. Though it is a rare occurrence, it most certainly bodes well for the school that is being represented to succeed in team play.
Aside from the singles title, though, that Zordani eventually won (6-0, 6-2), the doubles team of Jack Armstrong and Connor Polender also cruised to a Sectional Championship, winning their final (6-0, 6-2) over a doubles team from Libertyville. Besides Zordani, Armstrong, and Polender, who all left Warren’s Almond Campus yesterday as Sectional Champions, Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk finished 2nd in singles while Jack Pasquella and Danny Beedle finished in 3rd place overall in the doubles competition. The Lake Forest Scouts were awarded 1st place in the Warren Sectional Championship.
The boys will now compete in the IHSA State Championships hosted by Hersey High School in Arlington Heights next weekend.
