Club Spotlight: Debate Team

Club+Spotlight%3A+Debate

Looking to get involved with something new? Debate team might be the perfect place for you.

Debate teaches students to improve their public speaking skills and learn how to construct an effective argument.

In a typical meeting, Debate Team members start off with some snacks, then watch a current events video to stay informed on what’s going on in the world. Afterwards, they focus on improving one aspect of their speaking competition and practice analyzing arguments, picking apart the good and bad aspects of speeches.

Once they finish their in-depth teaching, members get up and practice delivering speeches in front of the group.

All this practice is to prepare the Debate Team for their conventions, which happen as far away as Madison, Wisconsin to Washington DC.

In the words of team President, Emmet Brady, “Debate is a tremendous life skill to have. The ability to speak confidently and present a coherent argument can bring someone from being a bystander to an active participant in life’s most important conversations.”

Even if you’re a little nervous or have no previous experience, give Debate Team a try. They meet from 3:25 to 5:00 on Tuesdays in the library classroom. It is coached by Mr. Wanninger and Mrs. Clark.
